New York Constitution (1777)
About This Text
Composed: c.1777 CE
On April 20, 1777, the Convention of Representatives of the State of New-York adopted the state’s first constitution. The constitution featured the separation of powers into three branches, a bicameral legislative branch, an executive branch, and a judicial branch. Founders John Jay and Robert Yates were instrumental in the drafting and adoption of this document. Later, founder Alexander Hamilton argued in The Federalist 1 that the Federal Constitution was an “analogy” to the New York state constitution.
